About this place

Watford Lodge is a small but genuinely rewarding wetland nature reserve managed by Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, sitting just north of New Mills alongside the River Sett. It covers just one hectare, but packs in a surprising amount of wildlife interest, from frogs, toads and smooth and palmate newts in the water, to kingfishers, dippers, grey wagtails and common sandpiper along the river's edge. Heron, mallard and moorhen are regulars on the lodge itself, and if you're patient you might spot a tawny owl or nuthatch in the mature horse chestnut and ash trees by the road.

There's a pond dipping platform built right on the reserve, which makes it a brilliant spot for children to get hands-on with pond life, especially on a warm spring or summer afternoon. A stretch of grassland attracts butterflies, and the whole place has a genuinely peaceful, unhurried feel. Spring and summer are the best times to visit for insects, pond life and birdsong, though the reserve is open at all times.

Entry is free, and dogs are welcome on a lead. It's worth knowing the area can flood after heavy rain, so wellies are a sensible call if the weather has been wet. It's a lovely, low-key spot for families who want a proper taste of nature without a big day out.
