Walton Park

Walton Park is a generous green space in Sale, sitting alongside the canal and packed with things to keep families busy. There are two separate play areas, one pitched at toddlers and one for older children, so everyone gets something suited to their age. The park also has a football pitch and a basketball area, and the canal-side setting makes even a simple wander feel like a proper outing.

The star attraction for most kids is the miniature train ride, a proper old-fashioned model train that actually carries passengers. It runs on Saturdays and Sundays from around 11am, and tickets are just 30p a ride. Do bring coins as it is cash only, which is all part of the charm.

There is a boat cafe on the water serving food and hot drinks, which makes it easy to settle in for a few hours rather than rushing off. Toilets are available on site, particularly on busier summer days, and the park has a wheelchair-accessible entrance.

The park is open daily, with gates opening at 7:30am on Fridays and Saturdays and 8am on other days, closing between 9pm and 10pm depending on the day. It suits families with children of all ages, dog walkers, and anyone who just wants a relaxed afternoon somewhere with a bit of scenery.
