About this place
Jacksons' Brickworks is a 9-hectare Local Nature Reserve in Higher Poynton that has been reclaimed by nature after its industrial past. The site is managed as a mix of wetland, grassland, semi-natural woodland and scrub, and is particularly important for the great crested newt, a species protected under European law. It is open every day from 9am, closing at 5pm in winter and 6pm during British Summer Time.
The footpaths are well-surfaced with fine gravel, making them suitable year-round and genuinely accessible for pushchairs, wheelchairs and mobility scooters. The route around the reserve is relatively flat, and there is a wheelchair-accessible path leading directly onto the Middlewood Way via two field gates. Keep an eye out for the bird hide and the information boards dotted around the site, which highlight recent wildlife sightings and different species to look out for.
It is a brilliant spot for families with children of all ages. Kids can explore the ponds and woodland, and once you have had a look around the reserve itself, the Middlewood Way is right on the doorstep for a flat, traffic-free walk or bike ride along the old railway track. The reserve is also a short walk from the Macclesfield Canal if you fancy extending the trip.
Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead throughout the site. There are information boards with suggested walking routes, path-side benches, and a dog waste bin on site. Guided walks are run by the Ranger Service, so it is worth checking their events pages if you would like a more structured visit.
