About this place

The Pankhurst Centre is the former home of Emmeline Pankhurst and the birthplace of the suffragette movement. It is the only museum in the world dedicated to telling the story of women's fight for the right to vote, and the building itself was saved from demolition in the 1980s by women who recognised just how important it was. It is a small, four-room house museum, but what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in significance.

Inside, you will find a timeline of the suffragette movement, thoughtfully presented exhibitions, and a team of passionate volunteers who genuinely love talking about the history here. Visitors regularly find themselves spending well over an hour, which is easy to do when the staff are this knowledgeable and welcoming. There is also a quirky little café and tearoom on site, with a wide choice of teas, biscuits, and snacks, plus a garden with benches at the rear.

The centre is open on Thursdays and Sundays, 11am to 4pm. Tickets can be booked in advance through their website. The building has a wheelchair-accessible entrance and accessible toilets, and it is a genuinely good-for-children visit, particularly for older kids who are starting to learn about history and social change.

This is a brilliant spot for families who want something a bit more meaningful than a standard day out. It is thought-provoking, well put together, and run with real heart. If you are anywhere near Manchester, it is well worth the trip.
