Lotherton is a beautifully maintained Edwardian manor set within extensive grounds that offer something for every family member. The house itself is worth exploring, with interesting historical artefacts and period rooms, whilst the landscaped gardens showcase seasonal planting and an impressive orchard with over 100 apple varieties.

For children, there's a dedicated Wildlife World with animals in spacious enclosures, plus woodland walks through peaceful grounds, playgrounds, and stables. The site is particularly good for families with younger children, as you can mix indoor exploration of the manor with outdoor play and gentle walking. Membership offers excellent value if you think you'd visit multiple times throughout the year.

What to bring

  • Comfortable walking shoes or wellies for the woodland trails and orchard
  • Sun cream and a hat for the gardens and open spaces
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers in case of rain
  • Picnic food and a blanket for the grounds, as the cafe can get busy
  • Camera for the gardens and house architecture
  • A mobility aid or pushchair if needed, as the grounds are extensive

Top tips

  • Buy tickets in advance online to skip queues, especially during school holidays and seasonal events like Halloween and Christmas
  • Start with the Wildlife World early in your visit while energy levels are high, then move to quieter woodland walks and the house later
  • The woodland walks are gentler underfoot near the house but can be muddier further into the woods, so check conditions if pushing a pram
  • If you have a dog, note that they're not allowed in the Wildlife World enclosure, though they may be welcome in other parts of the grounds
  • Consider membership if you live locally, as prices are reasonable and it lets you visit as many times as you like throughout the year
  • Visit the orchard if you're there in late summer or autumn to see the apple varieties, and check if any are available to taste or pick
