RSPB St Aidan's Nature Park is a restored wetland reserve set on the site of a former open-cast coal mine, now transformed into a thriving habitat for wildlife. The reserve features several well-maintained trails around lakes and marshlands, with viewing hides and accessible paths that make it ideal for families wanting to spot birds, insects, and other wildlife.
Children often see ducks, geese, kestrels, and if you're lucky, roe deer, especially on quieter visits. The circular trails suit different fitness levels, though some paths can be muddy after rain, so waterproof footwear is essential.
There's a café on site with views over the water, clean toilets, and a helpful information stand. The car park costs £4 for all-day parking, with accessible spaces available. The reserve welcomes families with children and is popular with walkers, cyclists, and dog owners (dogs must be kept on leads). It's an excellent place to introduce children to birdwatching and nature conservation, with plenty of spots to pause and observe without disturbing the wildlife.

Facilities
What to bring
- Wellies or waterproof walking boots, as many paths become muddy
- Binoculars and a bird identification guide or app for wildlife spotting
- Waterproof jacket and layers, as weather can change quickly
- Packed snacks and drinks, though there is a café on site
- Camera or phone for capturing wildlife photos
- Sun cream and hats for protection on open trails
Top tips
- Visit early morning on weekdays when it's quietest and wildlife is most active. Weekends and school holidays can get busy with cyclists and runners
- Wear wellies even if the weather looks dry. Many off-the-beaten-track paths are very muddy, and children's legs often get splashed
- Use the viewing hides and designated viewing points for the best chances to see birds without disturbing them
- Check the RSPB website before visiting to find out which species are currently visible, so you know what to look out for
- The circular trail is manageable with younger children, but allow extra time for stopping to watch ducks and other waterbirds
- The café sells drinks and snacks with nice views, making it a good spot to rest halfway round
