Tropical World is a hidden gem in Leeds, housed within beautiful greenhouses that contain the UK's largest collection of tropical plants and animals outside of Kew Gardens. Step into a warm, exotic jungle atmosphere and discover colourful butterflies, fascinating reptiles, cheeky meerkats, and a wonderful variety of creatures from around the world.

The rainforest setting with tropical plants and waterfalls creates a truly immersive experience that feels like a genuine escape, even though you're right in the middle of Yorkshire. It's an intimate, reasonably priced day out that works beautifully for families with younger children, with enough to see and explore to keep most ages entertained for a couple of hours. The venue is council-run and offers good value, with a modest café serving fairly priced refreshments.

What to bring

  • Camera or phone to capture the colourful butterflies and animals
  • Hand sanitiser and wet wipes for before and after handling activities
  • Light layers and a thin jumper, as the greenhouse can feel warm but the temperature difference from outside may be noticeable
  • Snacks and water, especially for younger children, as the café can get busy during peak times
  • Comfortable walking shoes for the walk-through experience

Top tips

  • Arrive early in the week or during term time to avoid weekend crowds and get clearer views of the animals without queues
  • Take your time in the tropical house as it's larger than it first appears and there's plenty to spot at different levels
  • Visit the outdoor garden and kids play area with maze after going through the main greenhouse for a change of scene
  • Check the website for current admission prices before visiting, as prices are subject to change
  • Allow at least 1.5 to 2 hours for your visit, including time for the café if you'd like a refreshment break
