About this activity

Drama Kids Harrogate runs weekly drama classes for children aged 5 to 18, split into age-appropriate groups: Lower Primary (5-8 yrs), Upper Primary (9-11 yrs), and Youth Theatre (12-18 yrs).

The focus is on using drama as a practical way to build real-world communication skills and confidence, rather than purely training performers for the stage.

Classes are led by Principal Caryn Walton-Binns, who has been with Drama Kids York for 18 years and still teaches seven classes a week herself. She holds a BA from Durham University and LAMDA Grade VI, and has won several national awards within the Drama Kids network.

Sessions take place at Harlow Community Centre on Beckwith Avenue, which is a familiar, accessible community venue in Harrogate. The programme includes drama games, improvisation, scene work and performance opportunities, and children can also work towards LAMDA exams and qualifications if they choose. There is also a Stage Combat (non-contact) option available, run in partnership with RC-Annie, which tends to go down well with older children who want something a bit different.

This is a good fit for children who enjoy being creative and expressive, whether or not they have any previous drama experience. The ethos is very much about every child finding their place at their own pace, without pressure, which makes it worth considering even if your child is on the quieter or more anxious side.
