The Thackray Museum of Medicine brings the history of healthcare to life through interactive displays and immersive experiences. Walk through Disease Street, a recreation of Victorian Leeds that captures what daily life was really like, complete with period smells that bring home how easily disease spread. You'll find everything from a working iron lung to a laboratory themed around poo, which tends to be a hit with children.
The building itself is fascinating too – it's housed in what was once a workhouse and later a hospital, adding layers of history to your visit. Younger children might spend 45 minutes to an hour here, while pre-teens and teenagers will find plenty to engage them across multiple floors.
There's a Lego play area and for younger visitors, a gift shop with a good range of toys and books, and a café if you need a break (note that they don't heat hot food, so cold picnic options work well).
They also have the Sparks! soft play area which is designed specifically for little ones (aged 0-5), giving them a safe, engaging space to play, explore, and discover.

Facilities
What to bring
- Comfortable walking shoes, as there is plenty to explore across multiple floors
- A camera or phone to capture interesting exhibits like the iron lung and Disease Street recreations
- Hand sanitiser, as interactive displays are frequently touched by visitors
- A packed lunch or snacks, as the café doesn't serve hot food and can get busy during peak times
- A small notebook if your child likes to sketch or jot down facts about medical history

- Visit on a weekday during school holidays if you can – families report it's busy but not overwhelmingly so, and special activities like the Lego play area keep younger children engaged
- Arrive before 3:15 PM to ensure you have at least 45 minutes to explore before closing time, as last admission is 3:15 PM

- Ask staff about the building's history as a former workhouse and hospital when you arrive – it adds fascinating context to your visit
- Take advantage of the free or paid parking on-site, which is easier than hunting for spaces elsewhere in the area
- Allow at least 45 minutes to an hour, though pre-teens and teenagers often want to stay longer to explore the interactive sections thoroughly
