About this place
Leeds Industrial Museum sits inside what was once the world's largest woollen mill, and that setting alone makes it worth the trip. The museum tells the story of the science and industry that shaped Leeds and the wider West Yorkshire region, with working textile machinery, engineering exhibits, and plenty of infographics to bring it all to life. On demo days you can see the machines running, which is something else entirely.
Inside, there is more than just looms and engines. The Palace Picture House is a proper little vintage cinema where you can catch short films in original seats, and there is a play area styled as an engineer's office that younger children absolutely love. School holiday drop-in sessions and events like wet felting workshops are included in admission, so there is usually something extra on during the breaks.
The museum is open Tuesday to Friday from 10am and at weekends from noon, closing at 5pm each day. It is closed on Mondays. Wheelchair-accessible entrance, toilets, and parking are all available, and baby changing facilities are on site too. Do note that the grounds, engine shed, and locomotives are currently off limits due to ongoing maintenance work, and the refreshment and community space is also being refurbished.
This one works well for a wide age range. Younger children are kept busy with hands-on activities, older kids and teenagers get the engineering and history angle, and adults tend to find themselves genuinely absorbed. The staff are knowledgeable and happy to explain the exhibits, which makes a real difference.
