This is a full day of outdoor adventure for children aged 8 to 12, set in the woodland environment at TCV Skelton Grange. Your child will spend the day exploring nature, building camps, and engaging in hands-on woodland activities that change with the seasons. The activities are designed to encourage curiosity, resilience and a genuine connection with the outdoors, whether that's learning about wildlife, building shelters, or tackling natural challenges.

The beauty of this session is that it's led by experienced outdoor educators who adapt activities based on what the group enjoys and what the environment offers that day. Some days might focus on den-building and survival skills, whilst others could involve nature trails, water exploration, or seasonal crafts. Your child will work as part of a group, so they'll develop teamwork and problem-solving skills alongside their love of the outdoors.

What to bring

  • Waterproof jacket and trousers, as woodland play often involves wet conditions and mud
  • Extra clothes including additional socks and a spare jumper for layering
  • Sturdy, closed-toe shoes or wellies with good grip for woodland terrain
  • Packed lunch and snacks plus a refillable water bottle to keep your child hydrated throughout the day
  • Any medications or personal care items your child might need
  • Sun cream and a hat if the weather is sunny, as some woodland areas have open clearings

Top tips

  • Arrive early to allow time for check-in and help your child settle with the group before activities begin. This makes a real difference to how they approach the day.
  • Dress your child in layers rather than one thick jumper, so they can add or remove clothing as their activity level and the weather changes.
  • Send your child in clothes they genuinely don't mind getting dirty. Woodland play is messy and that's the whole point, so avoid favourite outfits.
  • Pack a change of clothes in the car for the journey home, as your child will likely be muddy and damp by the end of the day.
  • Check the weather forecast the night before and discuss with your child what outdoor conditions to expect. This helps them mentally prepare and feel more confident.
