About this place
Whipsnade Zoo is the UK's largest zoo, spread across 600 acres and home to more than 2,500 animals. Because of the sheer scale of the place, the animals have genuinely spacious, natural enclosures, and it really does feel more like a safari than a traditional zoo. Highlights include the elephants, white rhinos, lions, giraffes and red pandas, with stunning views over the Chiltern Hills thrown in for good measure.
There is a huge amount to do beyond just watching the animals. The children's play areas are large and well laid out, there are daily talks, and you can take a ride on the Whipsnade Railway for a different way to take in the grounds. As part of ZSL (Zoological Society of London), the zoo also runs education workshops and conservation experiences, so there is real depth here if you want it.
Come prepared: this is a full day out and comfortable shoes are essential given how much ground there is to cover. You can also drive your own car around parts of the zoo if walking the whole site feels like too much. It is worth packing your own food and drinks, as on-site catering can be pricey. The zoo is open daily from 10am, and the site is fully wheelchair accessible, including accessible toilets and seating.
This is a brilliant day out for families with children of pretty much any age, as well as anyone who loves wildlife. Younger ones will be kept busy for far longer than you might expect, so do not underestimate how much time you will want here.
