The Deep is one of the UK's most impressive aquariums, housed in a striking glass building on Hull's waterfront. You'll journey through three floors of exhibits, starting at the top and descending through different ocean zones and time periods, ending at the huge main tank at the bottom.
The highlight for most families is the underwater tunnel where rays and sharks glide overhead, and there's even a bubble where you can poke your head into the tank. Your kids will see everything from tropical fish to penguins, and there are plenty of interactive displays and educational videos throughout. The aquarium is thoughtfully designed so you can view the main tanks from multiple angles and perspectives, meaning there's always something new to spot.
The layout is straightforward to navigate, and there are comfortable seating areas where you can pause and simply watch the fish. It's suitable for all ages, from toddlers who'll be mesmerised by the moving fish to older children who'll appreciate the more detailed information about marine conservation and history.

Facilities
What to bring
- Camera or smartphone to capture the underwater tunnel moment and other highlights
- Comfortable walking shoes as there are three floors to explore at a gentle pace
- Snacks and a packed lunch, as the cafe prices can add up quickly for a family
- A reusable water bottle to stay hydrated while you explore
- A notepad or printed activity sheet if your child enjoys learning facts about the animals
Top tips
- Visit on a weekday morning, particularly Monday or Tuesday, when it's quietest and you'll actually be able to see the fish in the tunnel without crowds
- Buy your ticket at the desk as you arrive. It's valid for a full year, so you can return as many times as you like, which makes it better value than it first appears
- Start at the top and work your way down through the different zones. The layout guides you naturally, so you won't miss anything or get lost
- Don't rush past the main deep tank. Spend time in the seating areas watching the huge rays and other large fish from different angles
- Try the bubble experience where kids can poke their head into a tank. It's a highlight and usually quieter earlier in the day
- Allow at least two to three hours so you're not hurrying through. The aquarium is designed for exploration rather than a quick trip
