About this place

Pennington Flash is a stunning wetland nature reserve on the edge of Leigh, and part of the first National Nature Reserve in Greater Manchester. It was formed by the flash flooding of former coal mining sites and is now home to over 230 recorded bird species, including five RSPB red-listed birds and the rare willow tit. The whole site is open every day, with gates open from 8am through to either 5pm, 6pm or 7:30pm depending on the time of year.

For families, the adventure play area is a real highlight. It's accessible and inclusive, with swings, climbing frames, zip lines, and a central toddler area with play equipment shaped like swans and boats. After a run around, the Hide Coffee House and Café sits right on the lakeside and serves breakfast, lunch, cakes, fresh coffee and snacks. It's dog friendly with both indoor and outdoor seating, and the views over the water are genuinely lovely.

Beyond the play area, there's a network of footpaths, cycleways and bridle paths for walking and cycling at your own pace, plus six bird hides where you can sit quietly and watch the wildlife. There's also a 9-hole golf course, angling on the main lake, and sailing and windsurfing through the local sailing club. Regular free group walks run throughout the year too, including Nordic Walking.

The site is fully wheelchair accessible, including the entrance, toilets and seating areas. Paths are generally well maintained even after heavy rain, though wellies are a good idea in wetter months. A full calendar of events runs throughout the year, from nature trails and family festivals to artisan markets and cultural experiences.
