Lowther Castle & Gardens

Lowther Castle offers a fascinating combination of history, gardens and outdoor play that keeps families entertained for hours. The imposing castle ruins themselves are genuinely impressive, with plenty of information panels to help you understand the building's medieval past as a home to the Earls of Lonsdale. Beyond the ruins, the extensive grounds include beautifully maintained gardens, including stunning Japanese gardens that are gradually being restored. There's a proper playground at the back of the estate that's surprisingly excellent, with zip wires for older children, slides, swings and sand pits suitable for toddlers through to teenagers. The on-site cafe serves homemade food with good gluten-free options, and dogs are welcome on leads throughout the grounds.
