About this place

Kirklees Valley Local Nature Reserve sits in a valley with a surprisingly rich history. Before the industrial revolution it was home to a water-powered corn mill, and by 1850 there were eight factories along the brook. Nature has since reclaimed much of that industrial past, and the old lodges (former industrial ponds) and stonework have created a diverse range of habitats, earning much of the valley status as a Site of Biological Importance. Locals affectionately know it as "the lines."

The main accessible route follows the reclaimed railway line from Bury through Tottington to Greenmount, which forms part of National Cycle Network Route 6. It is fully surfaced and level, making it suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs, and you can walk, jog, cycle or horse ride along it. The full circular trail is around 4 miles and takes in steeper, unsurfaced sections, so boots are a good idea for that. No vehicles are allowed on the reserve itself, which keeps things peaceful.

For refreshments, the Kirklees Country Café is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 2pm, and there is also a friendly tea room with toilets in Tottington Centre (open Monday to Saturday). Free-range eggs and ice cream are available at weekends and bank holidays too. The reserve is well served by bus, and there is a Metrolink connection nearby.

This is a genuinely lovely spot for families, dog walkers and anyone who just needs a bit of fresh air and greenery. Wildlife is plentiful, the people you meet tend to be friendly, and the ongoing work to repair walkways and improve drainage means the paths are getting better all the time.
