Brockadale Nature Reserve is a wonderful woodland walk in Pontefract with plenty to discover for families of all ages. The reserve offers circular routes ranging from 30 minutes to 2 hours, so you can tailor your visit to suit your children's energy levels and interests. You'll find a mix of woodland paths, open fields, and stunning countryside views, with the added bonus of spotting horses and other grazing animals along the way.

The routes include some gentle ups and downs, muddy sections with stepping stones, and narrow paths lined with high vegetation, which makes for a more engaging adventure than a simple flat walk. There are picnic benches near the entrance, and if you fancy extending your outing, you can walk through to nearby Little Smeaton Village where there are refreshments available. Dogs are welcome but should be kept on leads due to the grazing animals. The reserve is accessible year-round and beautiful whatever the season.

What to bring

  • Waterproof jackets and trousers, as paths can be muddy with sections that flood after rain
  • Wellies or sturdy walking boots with good grip for muddy ground and stepping stones
  • A packed picnic and drinks to enjoy at the benches by the entrance
  • Binoculars for spotting wildlife and viewing the grazing horses and cows
  • A small backpack with a change of clothes for younger children, as muddy puddles are part of the fun
  • Sun cream and hats during warmer months

Top tips

  • Start with the shorter 30-minute route if you're unsure about your children's ability, then plan a return visit to try the longer circular walk
  • Wear neutral colours to blend in with the surroundings and increase your chances of spotting wildlife
  • Dogs on leads enjoy this walk, but be aware of the horses and cows grazing on the reserve
  • Visit after rain for the most atmospheric woodland walk, but check that paths aren't too waterlogged
  • The stepping stones over muddy sections are popular with children but can be slippery, so take your time
  • If you fancy a longer outing, extend your walk to Little Smeaton Village where you can stop for refreshments partway through
