Ardsley Reservoir is a pleasant, easy walk just outside Wakefield, perfect if you want something straightforward with the kids. The path is flat and surfaced all the way around, covering about 1.5 miles, so it's manageable for younger legs or buggies. There's a free car park with 19 spaces (though it does fill up quickly, especially on weekends and during dog-walking hours), and you'll get nice views across to Emley Moor on a clear day.
It's a popular spot with families, dog walkers and joggers. The walk is muddy in places after rain, but reviewers consistently mention it's a pleasant outing, with a couple of benches dotted around if you want to stop for a rest and a flask. The reservoir is open 24 hours, so you can visit whenever suits you best. Just remember there are no toilets or cafe on site, so plan accordingly. Dogs are welcome but must stay on a lead, and swimming isn't permitted as the water is dangerous.

Facilities
What to bring
- Waterproof jacket
- Sturdy walking shoes
- Water bottle
- Packed snacks or flask
- Sunscreen and hat
Top tips
- Arrive before 9:30 AM on weekends to secure a parking spot, as the 19-space car park fills quickly with dog walkers and becomes congested by mid-morning.
- Bring a flask and wear layers for blustery conditions, as the walk is exposed and weather can change rapidly even in rain.
- Keep dogs on leads at all times and do not let them drink from or enter the water due to dangerous machinery, cold-water shock, and toxic blue-green algae.
- Wear appropriate footwear as the flat 1.5-mile path can be muddy despite being surfaced, especially after rain.
- Use the free car park on Haigh Moor Road rather than street parking, and note there are no toilets or cafe facilities on site.
