Adel Dam Nature Reserve is a gem of a spot for families wanting to connect with nature without leaving Leeds. Managed by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, this compact reserve centres around a scenic lake with a well-marked walking trail that loops through woodland. The route is straightforward and unlikely to get you lost, making it ideal for families with younger children or anyone after a gentle outing. Throughout the year, you'll spot birds, insects and other wildlife, with two bird hides positioned perfectly for observation.
The reserve has been recently improved with new accessible features, including a 20-metre wooden walkway that reduces muddy sections, a viewing platform overlooking the lake, and a shelter with seating at the entrance. Yorkshire Wildlife Trust staff are often on site and happy to share their knowledge about local wildlife and nature. Entry is free, and there's wheelchair-accessible parking, though parts of the trail can be muddy or boggy depending on recent weather. The mossy trees and peaceful atmosphere make this a genuinely calming escape from the city.

What to bring
- Wellies or sturdy walking boots, especially after rain or wet weather, as sections of the trail can be muddy
- Binoculars for birdwatching from the hides
- A small rucksack with snacks and a drink for families with younger children
- A camera or smartphone to capture wildlife and the beautiful mossy trees
- Waterproof jackets in case of sudden showers
Top tips
- Go early in the morning or during quieter weekday times for the best chance of spotting birds and other wildlife
- Visit after dry spells if you have a pram or pushchair, as the wooden walkway and viewing platform are more accessible but other sections can get muddy
- Ask any Yorkshire Wildlife Trust staff on site for advice about what wildlife has been spotted recently and where best to look
- Allow 45 minutes to an hour for a full loop of the trail so you're not rushing with younger children
- The bird hides are perfect for sitting quietly and letting children observe nature at their own pace
