ICHIBAN Dojo on Meanwood Road is a traditional martial arts centre that brings together five disciplines under one roof: karate (Shukokai style), aikido, judo, Japanese Jiu Jitsu, and Kenjitsu. The idea behind it is to create a genuine centre of excellence where clubs work collaboratively rather than in isolation, and children are actively encouraged to try more than one art as they progress. The training space is a large 18x10 metre dedicated matted area, purpose-built for martial arts.
There is also a comfortable viewing and waiting area for parents, which is always handy when you have younger siblings in tow or just want to watch your child train. All instructors across every discipline are experienced, insured, and DBS checked. The ethos here is very much about traditional values, with discipline and respect built into the training from the start, but without the ego that can sometimes come with competitive clubs. This is a good option if your child is curious about martial arts but you are not sure which style suits them best, since the setup genuinely encourages cross-training. There are also separate male and female changing rooms with showers on site, which makes it practical for older children attending back-to-back sessions.
