Shibden Hall is a beautifully preserved 17th-century timber-framed manor that brings history to life for families. Inside, you'll find period rooms packed with original furnishings and artefacts dating back centuries, alongside knowledgeable staff and volunteers who can really bring the stories to life if you ask them questions. The grounds are equally impressive, with restored gardens, woodland walks, a mini-railway, and a boating lake that give younger children plenty to explore.

The hall has become well-known through the BBC drama Gentleman Jack, which tells the true story of Anne Lister who lived here, but it's a fascinating destination whether or not you've seen the show. There's a café on site serving decent refreshments, and the outbuildings contain their own museums worth visiting. Plan for a full morning or afternoon to do it justice, though families with younger children may want to focus on the outdoor attractions and gardens first.

What to bring

  • Sturdy walking shoes or trainers, as the grounds are hilly and can be muddy, particularly after rain
  • Waterproof jackets and wellies or walking boots, especially if visiting in autumn or winter
  • A light snack or packed lunch, though there is a café on site
  • Sun cream and hats during warmer months
  • A camera or smartphone for capturing the period rooms and gardens

Top tips

  • The terrain is quite hilly, so be prepared for uphill walks around the estate. Younger children or those with pushchairs may find it challenging in places.
  • Arrive early on weekends and school holidays to get the most out of the mini-railway and boating lake before they get busy.
  • Engage with the volunteers and staff on the day. They're genuinely knowledgeable about Anne Lister and the Lister family history, and will add real depth to your visit.
  • Allow at least 3 to 4 hours to explore the manor rooms, outbuildings, gardens and woods properly.
  • Visit during spring or summer when the gardens are at their best, or check for special events and themed activities like Halloween puzzles that enhance the experience.
  • There is free parking available on site as well as free street parking options nearby.
